Let’s help Geoff get back on the road

For those of you who don’t know Geoff Marshall, he’s a Londoner who moved to Charleston, SC, in 2006 and recently set out to shoot a documentary film about a 48-state roadtrip across the U.S.  And on the morning of June 29th he awoke in Greensboro, NC, to find that roughly $6,ooo of computer, video and photography equipment had been stolen from his car while he slept.

Geoff set out to tell a story about America, and we’d sure hate to see that story end like this.

So here’s what’s happening: The online community in Charleston, SC, is raising money to help Geoff get back on the road. And bloggers in Greensboro have been checking in to see what they can do to help. Meanwhile, Ken Hawkins, Geoff’s former boss at TheDigitel.com, has offered to cover the PayPal fees for anyone who pitches in.

Sure, eventually we’ll give Geoff plenty of grief about leaving his gear in the car. But right now, we just want to make sure that this story has a happy ending.

  1. I’m getting a “down for maintenance” message with I try to pay. Hopefully this will back up soon.

  2. Tina (Geoff's Mum)

I am getting the same message, have’ donated’ $50 but am unable to actually pay it. will try later.

  3. Hi there! Yes, it seems that as we quickly put up the site to start donations, the service we’re using (Tipjoy) is undergoing some maintenance. Not sure how long it’ll take them, but we’ll keep an eye on it and make an announcement on Twitter.

  4. Tina (Geoff's Mum)

I have cancelled my payment: tipjoy.com/cancel and shall try another way.

  5. I also cancelled this payment and have donated through PayPal.

  6. Tina (Geoff's Mum)

PayPal done, let’s get it up to 6000 by tomorrow!

  7. Absolutely gutted to hear Geoff’s news 😦

My first reaction was can we get in touch with a head office type persons in Apple, Nikon, Sony, Tom Tom in the US and get them to either “give” him replacement gear, or at least do him a deal at cost. Geoff has been an avid supporter and user of these companies kit over the years, so I would hope they would have a heart!

I would try to make this happen from NZ, but it would be quicker if someone could take on the challenge from the US.

We will then all have to take it upon ourselves to spread the word about any companies that DO come to the party!

  8. Sorry to hear of the theft. I know Greensboro has problems, but we have good people, too.

I wish there was a way to get your footage back.

    (donation made)

  9. We’re up to $4,500! Amazing!
